How Do We Support Parents? - An insight into attachment, emotion coaching and collaborative models

Are you curious about engaging in behaviour or parent support for your child? If so, this blog post may be helpful for you. At ECA Psychology, we adapt to client and family needs and draw on evidence-based interventions to support your current needs. Some of our favourites include:

1. An Attachment-Based Approach - Informed by the Circle of Security and Tuning into Kids Programs.

  • We use the approach that children build self-regulation through co-regulation.

  • We provide insights into child development and regulatory abilities and needs throughout development.

  • We also consider the regulatory challenges of our neurodivergent clients and advocate for understanding and support.

  • We understand the importance of behaviour modelling and consider the importance of 'tuning into' needs

  • We work to develop parents' ability to be emotion coaches and support their children through big feelings and challenging times.

2. The Collaborative Problem-Solving Approach - Dr Ross Greene

  • We conceptualise current challenges in light of unsolved problems and lagging skills.

  • We consider that for our neurodivergent clients, lagging skills are an area of substantial challenge, for example, maintaining sustained attention or coping with change. Under these circumstances, we advocate for a neurodiversity-affirming level of understanding with teachers and parents.

  • We pose a current challenge as an 'unsolved problem' and use the approach that kids do well if they can.

  • If children possess the necessary skills to manage their behaviour and meet expectations, they will naturally do well.

  • When children are struggling or displaying challenging behaviours, it indicates that we may be setting expectations above their current level and a focus would benefit from shifting towards modifying expectations, meeting needs and teaching skills.

We hope you have enjoyed this brief overview of some of the interventions we apply to behaviour and parent-based support! You are welcome to reach out for further information or to book with our psychologist.
