Neurodiversity Affirming Practice - What does it mean?

As a parent or caregiver of a child with a neurodivergent brain, which often includes an Autistic, VAST (ADHD), Specific Learning Difference, or a combination of the above brain styles, you may have experienced frustration or confusion navigating the healthcare system to find the right assessments and support for your child. Some assessments and therapies may focus on "changing" neurodivergent traits or are heavily "deficit-focused", rather than affirming and supporting a child's unique strengths and needs.

At ECA Psychology, we believe in providing neurodiversity affirming assessments and therapy within our paediatric psychology service.

What does that mean?

It means we recognise and celebrate neurodiversity as a natural variation in the human brain, rather than a disorder or deficit. We believe in assessing and supporting the whole child, not just their "symptoms or deficits". We use a strengths-based approach that recognises and builds upon a child's unique talents, interests, and passions.

We also understand that there are aspects of a neurodivergent's experience that is disabled by common education and work environments, particularly when this brain style is often the minority.

We advocate for needs and support our clients to self-advocate as they build their knowledge of themselves and their needs.

Our assessments are tailored to the individual needs of each child, taking into account their developmental history, family dynamics, and cultural background. We use a range of assessment tools and methods, including standardised testing, observation, interviews, and parent and teacher reports, to provide a comprehensive level of understanding. We also offer feedback and support to parents, caregivers, and teachers to help them better understand their child's neurodivergent brain and how to support their child's growth and development. If desired, we are able to offer feedback to the child/adolescent and enjoy providing certificates of recognition, and sensory toys and offer a safe space to discuss where and how to continue learning about neurodiversity.

Our therapy services are also neurodiversity affirming and evidence-based. We use a range of therapy modalities, such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Play Therapy, and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), to address a range of concerns, such as anxiety, depression, and social problem-solving. We integrate our understanding of the sensory needs and differences of neurodiverse brains and support our clients to build self-advocacy skills that can be used within their home, school, or work environments. We also offer parent coaching and support to help parents and caregivers better understand and respond to their child's needs.

We believe that neurodiversity affirming assessments and therapy can make a significant positive impact on a child's mental health, academic and social success, and overall well-being. We also feel this is important for the family to begin the path of an affirming level of understanding. By providing a safe and affirming environment for children and their families, we help empower them to embrace their strengths and celebrate their uniqueness.
